The first cold whisps of winter have hit us here in Hakuba and we are all eagerly anticipating another great season in Japan`s Northern Alps! With snow already accumulating on the upper slopes our attention turns to skiing, snowboarding and all activities in-between.

Allow Evergreen’s professional guides and instructors lead you to the very best areas in the backcountry and on the resorts. Whether you are an experienced veteran in the backcountry or are testing the slopes for the first time. We guarantee you will have a magical experience in the snow covered mountains of Japan.

Evergreen also has some exciting programs planned for this winter. Our popular ‘First Tracks’ Powder Clinics will get you the early morning fresh powder lines of the day with tips and techniques from a knowledgeable instructor. Children will also have a ball in our newly designed Kids Camps and Daycare service. We have tons of fun-filled activities for playing indoors and out. For those interested in improving their ski or boarding ability, why not join in a lesson with our qualified English speaking instructors. We offer lessons for young children through to the young at heart, from beginner to expert.

Alpine Ski

Whether it is your first time or you are looking to work on increasing your technique, our English speaking professional instructors can help you increase your skill and style. Evergreen’s lessons are conducted in a positive, encouraging teaching environment that helps students achieve their goals. Our professional instructors will make sure you are safe and that you are having a great time on the slopes. If you haven’t tried your hand at a winter sliding sport then why not give it a try!

Ski, snowboard and telemark rentals are available so come on by. Through step by step progression, technical skill development and by providing specific points to work on, we guarantee you will have a memorable experience and improve your technique!

Alpine skiing is the most popular style of skiing and is dependant on lift accessable terrain, which Hakuba abounds with; 15 resorts with over 100 lifts. Our Alpine  ski instructors use the Canadian and New Zealand method of instruction which not only allows for rapid skill progression but allows you to have fun while you learn. After all it is because skiing is fun that we love it so.

From carving the corduroy, to making sweeping turns in the powder, our instructors will teach you the finer points of this great way to descend the slopes. Kid's Namps

As parents sometimes need that time to get away from the kids and ski, we offer ski and snowboard instruction for the younger ones that focuses on fun. Friendly instructors will keep your children happy and safe while working on improving their skills. Lessons are based on the Canadian Ski/Snowboard Instructors Alliance standards and methodology and involve skill development through specific progression levels. Team up with a group lesson or have more personalized instruction with one of our private lessons. Through numerous exercises, games and challenges in a positive learning environment, children can discover the excitement of skiing or snowboarding which will spark their interest and motivation. If the kids need to take a little break from skiing we often have play-time in the snow, building snow-forts or snowmen, as well as some inside activities in the Daycare Lounge.

Make the most of your ski holiday by taking a guided tour of any of the six local mountains. With one of our friendly guides you will be cruising all the best runs, getting the best views and checking out the points of interest on the hill. First Track Powder Clinic

The old adage ‘early bird gets the worm’ rings true in the skiing world too. In this powder skills specific clinic we meet up early in the morning, catch the first gondola up and then are rewarded with fresh tracks while the rest of the masses are only just rising. With a professional ski/snowboard/telemark instructor who knows the best powder stashes on the mountain, we will work on powder skiing technique, tree skiing, and cover some safety concerns while skiing in powder. Once you ride the untouched soft pillowy powder runs you will know where the powder addiction comes from. A desire for fresh tracks and a minimum intermediate skill level are all that is needed to get that one of a kind feeling.

Daycare Service

For young children that may not be ready for the slopes just yet or those kids just wanting to have fun day playing indoors and out, daycare service is available.

While you take your time on the hill you can trust that your kids are having a great time playing games in the play area and sipping hot cocoa when it gets a bit chilly.

Our friendly staff of daycare workers love kids and are trained in First-Aid. Kids will feel right at home whether it is making arts & crafts, playing games or exploring the snowy world around the facility. We can also provide hourly daycare service for children as well. Please fill out our “Emergency Information Sheet” for your child prior to dropping them off. For children enrolled in our full-day daycare program a lunch (soup, sandwiches and drink) can be provided for \750, however for very young children or those with special dietary needs, please pack a lunch and snacks/drinks for them.

Snowshoe Trekking

If you can walk you can snowshoe. Enjoy the tranquility of the winter forest in the company of a knowledgeable guide who will introduce you to the beauty of the Japanese Alps. Search for animal tracks in the snow and relax with a cup of hot cocoa or spiced wine. Great for those days when you just want to get away from the crowds.

Full Moon Snowshoe

Experience the magic of a winter forest at night. Accompanied by a local guide we will don snowshoes and venture out under the stars and moonlight. With reflection off the snow, the area takes on a surreal feeling that one has to see to appreciate. A short trek will trek will bring us to a snow-house or “quincy” that is surprisingly warm.

Once inside enjoy a delicious cheese fondue and hot drinks that will warm your body and soul. Please contact Evergreen for these dates & details.

                                                         


Christmas Snowshoe

Fun for the whole family and a great way to enjoy a white Christmas. Explore the winter wonderland in the forest with friends and family on snowshoes. While the adults get time out to chat and enjoy spiced wine and Christmas cake, the children look for Christmas presents in the snow by searching for tracks in the snow. After warming up with some hot cocoa we will head back through the forest and have fun sledding along the way.

Free your heels and free your mind. Explore the silence of the winter forest and discover the fun of cross-country skiing. Allow our trained instructors to take you on track set trails and give you tips on Nordic technique that will allow you to have fun and feel confident with your ability.

Backcountry Tours

Come and explore the vast Hakuba backcountry and some of the very best powder skiing in, what many feel is the most spectacular terrain in the land of the rising sun.

Let a professional avalanche forecaster and guide lead you safely into the type of terrain you want to ride. Japan’s North Alps are just waiting for you to discover.

Backcountry Course Level:

Bunny Course (B)
For those who are just starting to explore the backcountry. An intermediate skill level and a desire to search out good turns in the winter mountains are the only requirements.

Cost: 8,400 yen (Includes shuttle, guide and tax)

Fox Course (F)
These tours are for those who have had experience in the winter backcountry and are looking for great powder days away from the crowds.

Cost: 9,450 yen (Includes shuttle, guide and tax)

Kamoshika Course (K)
These tours are for the expert skier or snowboarder who has joined in on a Bunny or Fox tour. You will have to be fit and have experience in the backcountry to join in on these challenging and exciting trips into steep terrain.

Recreational Avalanche Course

This two day course developed by the Canadian Avalanche Association standards will teach you the basics of safe travel in the backcountry, allow you to recognize avalanche terrain and make more informed slope stability evaluations. You will learn proper self-rescue and group management techniques for the backcountry.

English RAC 2007 : Jan. 6, 7 ; Mar. 3,4
Japanese RAC 2007: Jan 13, 14; Mar 17, 18

Cost: 21,000 yen (backcountry insurance additional \2000)
Location: Tsugaike Shizen, Hakuba, Nagano, Japan (unless otherwise posted)
Includes: Textbook, two full days of instruction, lift ticket, tax, (equipment rentals separate)

Extended backcountry training day. Prerequisite; Introductory RAC course. This extra day of field training is for those who want a chance to further their training in avalanche assessment. Practice slope stability tests, field observations, and route finding with the guidance and instruction of a CAA Level 2 professional.

                                                         


Advanced RAC

For those who want more than just the basics, this five day advanced course will complement learning from the basic course and give you greater skill in the winter mountains. This course will cover avalanche mechanisms & dynamics, weather analysis and observations, multiple beacon searching (analog and digital), comprehensive terrain analysis, route finding, group management, field tests and observations and rescue scenarios. We will also cover outdoor First-Aid, treatment for hypothermia and shock, basic CPR and victim transport from backcountry areas. This course is a must for those who are truly serious about riding safely in the backcountry.

Dates:

ENGLISH ARAC 2007: Jan 6,7,8 continued Feb. 3,4 (We have inserted a time for personal study before the end of the course to allow for questions and additional learning)
JAPANESE ARAC 2007: Feb 10-14; Mar 10-14

Cost: 55,000 yen
Location: Hakuba, Nagano, Japan
Includes: Textbook, one full day and three evenings of classroom and four days in the field, lift tickets, backcountry insurance, tax
Bring: Equipment (same as in the basic RAC course), one thermometer, one 8X or 10X loupe, one crystal screen, waterproof notebook and mechanical pencil for field observations. Operations Level 1

This operations Level 1 Avalanche Awareness course is held once a year in Japan and is run by J.A.N. It is equivalent to the Canadian Avalanche Association Level 1 Course. Please contact Evergreesn for dates and details
